Is naturally dyed fabric light & washfast?

This is a great question I get all the time and the answer is yes! It all depends on the preparation of your fabric and the dye you decide to use. The main factor that determines the light & washfastness of a dye is the tannin content. Using dyes rich in tannin will result in a more light & washfast result. More fugitive dyes definitely benefit from mordanting the fabric beforehand, which essentially helps bind the dye to the fabric. All of these steps and the foundations for natural dyeing can be found in my "Complete beginners guide to mordanting for natural dyes".

What fabric works best for natural dyeing

For natural dyes it's important to use natural fibers such as cotton, linen, wool, silk, hemp, etc. If your fabric contains small amounts of elastan or polyster that's ok.

Make sure to use sustainable, organic fabrics because they are better for the planet and also less treated with chemicals compared to conventional fabrics.

Where do you source your dye equipment and dye stuff

All of my pots and other tools are thrifted. You don't need fancy equipment to get started. Almost everything you need can be found in thrift shops and on fleamarkets.

When it comes to fabric, I love using old bedsheets, tablecloths, curtains etc.all if which are easy to find on ebay marketplace as well as thrift stores. I also get a lot of fabrics gifted. It doesn't matter if they have stains because you can easily dye over them!

What sewing machine do you use and which one would you recommend for beginners?

I use an old Bernina 1001 as well as a Juki serger. I love the Bernina, I got it second hand for 400€ from a sewing machine mechanic. I recommend looking for older machines that are sturdy and full metal. Mine doesn't have any fancy displays or such but it is trusty and perfect for normal sewing projects.

I want to learn natural dyeing, where should I start?

I think kitchen waste like onion skins are a great way to start. They are fool proof and very easy to use. My first natural dye projects were with onion skins and I loved that experience, it got me fully addicted to the craft.

I would start exploring other techniques from there, like flower pounding or flower and leaf printing.

Don't get overwhelmed with the scouring and mordanting part, it feels a lot at first but once you get the hang of it, it's a very easy and straight forward process. I love using the cold mordanting method with aluminum tri formate, it's the most sustainable and easy to use mordanting method.
